It continued to rain Monday and much needed water fell to earth. The Polish Military Government has imposed martial law and issued decrees that drastically curbed civil and labor rights. Portions of the roof covering the north corridor of McAlister Square shopping mall in Greenville collapsed Saturday night during a fire that began in one of the mall’s 56 stores. Six of the stores were destroyed by fire. The other 50 sustained smoke and water damage. South Carolina football coach and athletic director Jim Carlen was fired Saturday. John McEnroe battled his way past Argentina's Jose Luis Clerc 7-5, 5-7, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 Sunday to clinch the 1981 Davis Cup for the United States. The final match between Roscoe Tanner and Argentina’s Guillermo Vilas was halted by mutual consent of the two captains with Tanner leading 11-10 in the first set. If you desire a Christmas (Continued On Back Page) Scott Wall Is Kiwanis Speaker The Tryon Kiwanis Club meets today (Tues.) at 12:45 p.m. at the Pacolet River Plantation. Scott Wall will speak on "Employee Assistance Program, A Benefit to Industry and Workers in Polk County." Joel Dobbin is in charge of the program. Decorate Trees Seventeen different trees in Tryon were decorated by Tryon Elementary School students. The students used natural materials in their decorations. The grade which won first place and a Christmas party was Mrs. Jean Preseton s 3rd grade. In second place was Mrs. Patsy Jones’ 4th grade and third was Mrs. Linda Young’s 4th grade. Mrs. Peggy Edwards' kindergarten won honorable mention. The contest was sponsored by the Tryon Chamber of Commerce. Democratic Executive Committee Meets The Democratic Executive Committee will meet Thursday at the Polk County Courthouse at 7:30 p.m. All members of the Executive Committee and other interested democrats are invited to attend. David Vining of Clemson University has arrived at his home in Tryon for the holidays Man Shot; Thrown In Well; And Still Alive Polk County Sheriff Boyce Carswell reported that Tyrone Davis, 33, a member of the Spartanburg Fire Department, was brought to Polk Saturday, shot, thrown down an abandoned well and is still alive to talk about it. Mr. Davis told Sheriff Carswell that a white female, age about 50 and a white male, age about 25, picked him up in the Red Lobster in Spartanburg Saturday afternoon. He said that they brought him to a dirt road (White Oak Rd.) near the Coxe place where they parked at an abandoned house. He was shot in the neck with a large hand gun about 6 p.m. They then tied his hands and dragged him about 30 ft. to an abandoned well. They then threw him down the well and shot several times in the well after they threw him in. Sheriff Carswell said that there was no water in the well, but the bottom was soft. After the man and woman left, Mr. Davis said that he climbed out of the well and walked about three miles to the home of Kenneth Roddy. Mr. Roddy carried him to the Green River Baptist Church Parsonage from where the Sheriff and the Ambulance were called about 10:30 p.m. He was taken to St. Luke’s Hopsita) where he was treated and admitted and then Continued On Back Page Auditions For Music Scholarship Young musicians from across the state will be competing this winter for a chance to boost their music careers through one year of free studies. The “NCNB 1982 Music Competition", sponsored by North Carolina National Bank, will award two full, one-year scholarships to the School of Music at the North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston- Salem. Winners in the statewide competition will be selected based on regional auditions Feb. 6 in Marion, Salisbury, Raleigh and Greenville and a final competition in Charlotte Feb. 23. The competition is open to residents of North Carolina who have not reached their 20th birthdays and who are not enrolled in institutions of higher learning in the state. Competition is open to strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, harp, piano, classical guitar and voice. Applications, which must be in by Jan. 21, can be obtained from music teachers or by writing Shelby Graham, NCNB Corporation, T15-4, Charlotte, N. C., 28255.
